Garden and Aquaponics Greenhouse

Harmony Science Academy Lubbock

What started out as a single growing bed in 2016 has turned into a full garden and aquaponic greenhouse today.   Through this, our students have been introduced to growing organic foods and harvesting vegetables, conservation, gardening, recognition of plants, and a form of agriculture that combines raising fish in tanks with soilless plant culture.  In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from raising fish provides a natural fertilizer for the plants and the plants help to purify the water for the fish.  Not only have they learned about agriculture, they have also learned about nutrition and initiated bi-weekly salads made from vegetables harvested from the garden.  Students have also had the opportunity to participate in fundraising by selling the harvested vegetables at local farmers markets.
